As a result, the phenol resin came to be recognized its existence, but was not put to practical use at that time.<br \/>\r\nIn the 1890s phenol and formaldehyde became available as industrial materials and were studied actively.<br \/>\r\nAmerican chemist Leo Baekeland succeeded in producing hard moldable plastic for the first time.
